Why The Walking Dead's season 7 finale will be the best in the show's history. Norman Reedus and friends give us the inside track.

But the not- so- great news is that while Season 7 of the AMC zombie apocalypse drama opened with dynamite viewership numbers, the show's ratings have dipped since then. Even last Sunday's midseason finale was, as the Hollywood Reporter notes, watched by fewer people than the 2. From Michael O'Connell's THR story. After three days of DVR, the mid- season finale averaged 1. Fix the Negan Problem: In recent seasons, . I haven't read the comics, so I'm approaching . But so far, all we know about Negan is that he loves to hear the sound of his own voice, and when irritated, he kills people, or has his weirdly devoted minions kill people. It might help if Negan's speechifying was eloquent and electric, say, along the lines of the loquacious Al Swearengen (Ian Mc. Shane) in . Every now and then, Morgan has been able to lower the volume, and he's a lot more scary when he's quiet than he is when he's gassing on. While Negan's backstory has been explored in comics form, so far all we know about him on the TV show is that he has a short temper, doesn't like it when people disrespect him, manages by fear and intimidation (and murder) and that he's sadistic. We've seen these qualities displayed so often, and to such repetitious effect that while Negan is certainly villainous, he's also mostly boring. In a few moments, as when he's inexplicably letting Carl (Chandler Riggs) get away with an assassination attempt, or when he's holding baby Judith, Morgan is able to suggest greater dimensions to Negan. Let's hope that the second half of Season 7 will give Morgan some breathing room, and lets him show us that there's more to Negan than the leather jacket- wearing, baseball bat- wielding monster we've seen so far.

Quit dividing Rick's group: This was already irritating in Season 6, and the first half of Season 7 offered further examples of how . Why isolate Carol (Melissa Mc. Bride), the show's most consistently compelling character, in the suburbs of the Kingdom? Even though the episode focusing on her, Morgan (Lennie James), Ezekiel (Khary Payton) and his tiger was amusing, it felt disconnected from the rest of the show. Episodes cutting Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Sasha (Sonequa Martin- Green) and others off from the core group suffered from the same problem. Watch The Family Streaming there.

And they better stay that way in the second half the season. Enough with torturing Rick and his group: You can argue that seeing Rick and Daryl (Norman Reedus) broken and abused by Negan and his minions was dramatically necessary to raise the stakes as they decide to fight back. But did it have to go on for pretty much all of the first half of the season? And did it have to, again, be so predictable? Hey, here comes Negan, I wonder if he's going to make a speech about loyalty and then do something violent?

Heck yeah, he did! Snore. The best thing to be said for the first half of Season 7 is the midseason finale was an improvement (and yes, I did get a little choked up when Rick and Daryl hugged it out.) But there's still a lot of work to be done for .
