Every year at Comic- Con, certain things—news stories, trailers, publicity stunts—stand out from the rest of the crowd. With so much happening every single day, it’s just inevitable. Some stuff exceeds our expectations or delightfully surprises us; other stuff distinguishes itself because it sucks. Here are the winners and losers of this year’s Comic- Con.

Winners. Black Panther. The Marvel Studios panel was filled with big moments, including only the second public screening ever of footage from Avengers: Infinity War.

But the first film at the con that made almost every single person in Hall H jump out of their seats in applause was the new, exclusive footage from Black Panther. The panel represented everything that makes Comic- Con special, with magic moments (David Tennant doing a Scrooge Mc. Duck rant completely on the fly), awesome reveals (Darkwing Duck!), and fun clips—plus the amazing feeling that the cast, the crew, and the fans were all equally excited about the show. You can’t fake that kind of passion, and while Comic- Con can be crowded and exhausting and full of huge, overhyped projects, the Duck. Tales panel was a reminder of how it can also offer an amazing, genuinely heartfelt experience.

Finally, in a nifty bit of cross- promotion, we got a very clever, very funny animated short imagining what would happen if Archer stepped into a Kingsman movie and encountered fellow spy Eggsy.

Westworld has only been filming its second season for a few weeks, so the production team must have been hustling like crazy to cobble enough footage to present a season two teaser trailer in time for their panel. And watching Dolores ride on horseback while wielding a shotgun, killing park guests.. That was simply breathtaking.

Happily, this year, there were just as many cool things to do outside the convention center than inside. HBO had an insanely immersive experience themed to Westworld as well as one for Game of Thrones. Warner Bros. presented a stunningly recreated 2.

Los Angeles for Blade Runner, and Netflix let fans check out props and exhibits from their favorite shows. Plus, there were King Kong monster bones, a Tick scavenger hunt, and much much more. You didn’t need to be inside to really have fun at this Comic- Con, and it was a very welcome development. GLStranger Things. A lot is riding on the second season of Stranger Things. The first one was a surprise smash, garnering several Emmy Award nominations and thrusting six previously unknown child actors into the spotlight. Naturally, expectations have gotten even higher for season two.

Luckily, the trailer released during San Diego Comic- Con was everything fans wanted.. It reminded us of everything we loved about the first season, while also showing the new twists and turns we’ll get in the future of the show. Kirby’s work, his grandson gave a small speech at the Eisner awards, and several projects that directly continue his work were hyped at the con, like DC’s upcoming Mister Miracle series, along with a variety of other one- shots featuring his creations. It sounds crazy, but this tie- in movie to Lego’s self- generated faux- ninja line of toys shocked us all by having one of the best trailers revealed at Comic- Con. We weren’t expecting anything out of the film, despite the ridiculously high bar set by The Lego Movie and The Lego Batman Movie, both of which relied on already established pop culture icons and franchises.

But The Lego Ninjago Movie blew us away with its trailer, which was funny and interesting despite the lack of Gandalf, Lando Calrissian, Superman, and us knowing absolutely nothing about Ninjago. Hell, we’d go see it just because of the giant live- action cat attack. JWSupernatural. The immortal TV series Supernatural might have had a relatively uninteresting panel, not revealing any new footage from season 1.

As fans waited in the dark for the panel to begin, Supernatural’s unofficial theme song, Kansas’ “Carry On My Wayward Son,” began to play. The lights came on, and lo and behold—Kansas was there to perform the song live!

It was an incredible treat for fans of the series, as well as a reminder that Kansas can still kick ass. BEDC Comics. The writing’s been on the wall for some time now about the current trajectory of the comics industry, particularly when it comes to the Big Two. People are buying fewer and fewer comics while publishers struggle to come up with ideas to keep them financially successful, catering to the desires of legacy audiences while also appealing to a new generation, for whom nostalgia isn’t enough to make them want to fork over their cash for yet another crossover event.

Before going any further, let me take a moment and share the only review of Iron Man & Hulk: Heroes United that, frankly, matters one bit: that of a young third grader who's still angry at his dear old dad for not enjoying Marvel's first CG- animated feature. Me: "They could have picked a better villain." Him: "I'm glad they picked someone different. He was like Electro crossed with Abomination!" Me: "Abomination was already in the movie." Him: "Yeah, but he didn't have electricity!") I yawned at fight scenes, he was perched on the edge of his seat. And every time I winced at the wooden, long outdated animation, he beamed. I quipped, "It looks like a videogame." He cheered, "It looks like a videogame!") Suffice it to say, kids will eat up every second of Heroes United. But the more seasoned fanboys among us? Prepare yourselves.

It's a rough, unremarkable tumble down a steep, jagged cliff that's as disappointing as its trailers suggest. In Heroes United, the Invincible Iron Man (Adrian Pasdar) and the Incredible Hulk (Fred Tatasciore) come together to save Earth from its greatest threat yet. When two HYDRA scientists try to supercharge a Stark Arc Reactor with Hulk's Gamma Energy, they unleash a being of pure electricity called the Zzzax (Dee Bradley Baker), and he's hungry for destruction. Together, Iron Man and Hulk are the only force that stands in the way of the Zzzax's planetary blackout. But first the superhero duo will have to get through snarling Wendigos, deadly robots and the scaly powerhouse, Abomination (Robin Atkin Downes).

Can two of Marvel's mightiest heroes find a way to work together without smashing each other before time runs out? As technical encodes go, Iron Man & Hulk's 1. AVC MPEG- 4 presentation is a proficient one. It doesn't help the film's animation, though, which is littered with dusty black levels, inconsistent clarity, aliasing, banding and other micro- budget woes. Perpetual smoke and fog also make contrast appear a touch dim, despite the fact that it's actually quite steady and strong. In other words, each eyesore traces back to the source, meaning this is as good as it possibly gets. Fortunately, colors pack Hulk- sized punch, primaries are crackling with energy, detail is about as revealing as can be expected, and debilitating issues - - compression artifacts, errant noise and the like - - aren't at play.

Heroes United may not look pretty, but Disney's presentation is faithful to a fault. Disney's DTS- HD Master Audio 5. Saturday morning action as it erupts on screen. Voices are clean and clear, albeit a touch too weightless, and prioritization is decidedly decent, without anything in the way of diluted dialogue. LFE output is suitably explosive, with heavy thooms, devastating power slams and enough weight and oomph to help ground the heroes' floaty fights with Zzzax, Wendigo and Abomination a bit more.

The rear speakers are fairly aggressive as well, with fun directionality and commendable pans. Watch Empire Records Online Etonline. Like the film's animation, the sound design isn't anything to write home about, but Disney's lossless track works relative wonders.

Marvel could teach DC a thing or two about big screen feature film adaptations, but its DC that could teach Marvel a few things about direct- to- video animation. Marvel's latest ranks near the bottom of the list, with a Shellhead and Green Behemoth that are more Superhero Squad than Joss Whedon's Avengers. Everything from the stilted script to the shoddy animation to the dead- on- arrival slapstick comedy is a mess, and no one shows up to save Heroes United from its greatest enemy: itself. Disney's Blu- ray release is much better, with an AV presentation that's faithful to the animated source.
