Booing at Cannes is as much a tradition as the festival itself, and its reaches know no bounds, as Nicole Kidman found out Monday morning upon the premiere of The Killing of a Sacred Deer. When a film polarizes crowds on the Croisette, its not uncommon for festivalgoers to vent their disapproval as the credits roll, and this year, Yorgos Lanthimos latest joined an elite group of titles to have elicited the disdain of Cannes attendees. Watch Killing Ground Full Movie' title='Watch Killing Ground Full Movie' />Watch Killing Ground Full MovieWatch Killing Ground Full MovieFilm critics, on the other hand, have answered the call of the naysayers with generally favorable notices for the project Kidmans second of four projects premiering at Cannes, calling it the most accessible work produced by the Greek born filmmaker, whose prickly filmography he most recently directed The Lobster  has slowly but steadily charted the rise of one of contemporary international cinemas leading visionaries. On paper, the film sounds as grim as Lanthimos previous works. It stars Colin Farrell as a successful surgeon, Steven, who forms a strange bond with a teenage boy, Martin Barry Keoghan, and inserts the mysterious youth into his personal life, which also includes his ophthalmologist wife, Anna Kidman and two children. Needless to say, it appears as if things take a gravely sinister turn, with most reviews singling out Lanthimos firm grasp on creating a palpably unsettling mood thats somehow easier to digest than his previous efforts. Lanthimos guides us with supreme control toward a wordless coda, its confronting malevolence lingering after the end credits roll. The Greek director here further cements his position among the worlds most interesting contemporary filmmakers, stoking anticipation for his next English language feature, The Hollywood Reporters David Rooney writes in his review. This films grim scenario of a family under dire threat will make it hard for some to watch. But the impressive rigor of its craft, the skillfully subdued intensity of the acting and the startling originality of the story will make the film unmissable for anyone who cares about bold filmmaking. The Guardians Peter Bradshaw adds Yorgos Lanthimoss taboo horror The Killing of a Sacred Deer moves with a somnambulists certainty along its own distinctive spectrum of weird. Its an intriguing, disturbing, amusing twist on something which in many ways could be a conventional horror thriller from the 1. There is a strident orchestral score, nightmarish fish eye shooting angles, down low and up high, and people walking along corridors in such a way that makes forward movement feel like slo mo falling. Though critics have praised Lanthimos direction, Kidmans performance has been hailed as one of the films standout elements, with some critics comparing it to some of her less commercial turns of years past. A2. 4Kidmans pricklingly ambiguous performance recalls her career best work in Jonathan Glazers Birth in close up her face gives you volumes to read, but always holds back the final page, Robbie Collin writes for The Telegraph. Referencing the same film, Screen Dailys Jonathan Romney agrees, writing Kidmans highly ambivalent performance is one of her best in ages, initially recapturing the quizzical detachment she showed in Jonathan Glazers Birth, but gradually ramping up to an intensity that is all the more frightening for its chilly calm. Alicia Silverstone, perhaps occupying the most prestigious film role of her career here as Martins mother, is being lauded as another highlight despite only appearing in one scene, with Rooney exclaiming Silverstone is a delight in her single scene, scaring Steven off with her aggressive play for him, and then returning in a last ditch effort to the dessert he earlier declined. Desperate seduction lines dont get much funnier than, Youre not leaving until you try my tartDespite the sensationalized booing, it seems as if Lanthimos could have another awards contender on his hands just four months after his last Cannes competition title, The Lobster, scored an Oscar nod in the best original screenplay category. If the reviews are any indication, The Killing of a Sacred Deer could net technical support from the Academys below the line branches perhaps for Thimios Bakatuakiss cinematography, though Kidman could rise as a supporting actress contender as well. Polarizing crowds and critics doesnt necessarily spell disaster for a film at Cannes. The jury this year fronted by Pedro Almodovar, with the likes of Jessica Chastain, Will Smith joining the ranks as well often operates independently, and its taste is notoriously difficult to trace as the festival rages. Kidmans reception, however, is promising, and its not entirely preposterous to consider her a frontrunner for the festivals Best Actress prize outside of Oscar prospects. Whether shell receive the honor for The Beguiled, Deer, or at all remains to be seen. The Killing of a Sacred Deer opens Nov. A2. 4. The Lobster to perform beyond expectations for such a uniquely strange movie, the new films grim scenario of a family under dire threat will make it hard for some to watch. But the impressive rigor of its craft, the skillfully subdued intensity of the acting and the startling originality of the story will make the film unmissable for anyone who cares about bold filmmaking. Peter Debruge VarietyAs allegories of extreme discomfort go, this one is masterfully orchestrated. And if recognized as the tragedy it is that is, stripped of its thrills and viewed instead as a pathetic fait accompli, then a direct line can be drawn between the film  merely the latest and most directly engaging example of the so called Greek Weird Wave revolutionizing world cinema at the moment and Greeces far older dramatic tradition, where characters such as Agamemnon and Medea were confronted with decisions equally impossible to bear. Best Kidman shout out Fortunately, Farrell and Kidman are astonishingly gifted at playing the subtext of every scene. Consider the moment in which Steven insists Anna follow him down to the basement. Has he chosen her as his sacrifice Is this the momentNone of the dialogue acknowledges the shocking development that follows  to the extent that the East German Stasi could be listening in and wouldnt pick up on whats actually happening  but the two actors communicate whats being said in total clarity with their eyes. Robbie Collin The TelegraphLanthimos and his regular co writer Efthymis Filippou stake out this terrain with such precision, poise and nerve that summarising Martins scheme here would do the film a serious disservice. But unlike the directors previous film The Lobster 2. Farrell  or his earlier Greek language films, including 2. Oscar nominated Dogtooth, for that matter  the premise isnt elaborate, unfolds in a recognisable world, and doesnt require much digestion. WATCH Hostiles Trailer Hot Telluride Toronto Christian Bale Movie. EXCLUSIVE Here is an exclusive first peek at footage for Hostiles, the Scott Cooper directed Western acquisition title that became the talk of Telluride for the quality of the picture and the strong performance by Christian Bale as well as Rosamund Pike and Wes Studi. The film played Telluride instead of Venice because the former made it part of a special Bale tribute, and perhaps no movie up for grabs captured the fancy of criticsjournalists there more than this film. The big question which distributor will step up, acquire the film and launch it in awards season Bale stars as an Army captain who in 1. Indian enemy Studi back to his tribal home. Along the way he picks up Pike, who has lost her entire family to a vicious Indian attack. There is hardness and hatred that has gotten the picture compared to the classic 1. Coopers work and particularly a performance by Bale that has him being shortlisted alongside Gary Oldmans Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour, and the yet to be seen Denzel Washington in the Dan Gilroy directed Roman J Israel, Esq that was just added to Toronto, and the Paul Thomas Anderson directed fashion industry film reputed to be the swan song of Daniel Day Lewis. The film was pre screened for buyers, so they all have ruminated over releasing the dark Western, but those who waited to see audience response can only be buoyed by the reaction so far. Entering Toronto without a distributor has always been tricky, but it has worked in the past with actor performance driven films like The Wrestler. It requires a distributor which isnt already loaded with horses in the Oscar race, because awards campaigns are so time intensive. Who knows if it happens, but a logical landing place might be Annapurna. The first feature that launched the company as distributor and marketer of its films was last months Detroit, which landed with a thud and not nearly the needed impact to feel like a factor. Also, Megan Ellisons company is a producer of the PTA film but its distribution and Oscar fortunes will be handled by Focus Features. Annapurna is separately backing the Adam Mc. Kay directed film which stars Bale as former U. S. Vice President Dick Cheney, for release in 2. It makes all kinds of sense, seeing a company which just launched its marketingdistribution arm flex its muscles with a 5. Oscar shot. Other potential suitors are rumored to include Netflix which has in awards season the Dee Rees directed Sundance acquisition Mudbound and the Angelina Jolie directed First They Killed My Father and Fox Searchlight, whose Oscar season slate includes The Shape Of Water, the Guillermo del Toro directed film that also drew raves in Telluride and Venice before arriving in Toronto. Hostiles premieres in Toronto on Monday night, September 1. Relativity. Regardless of which distributor rises to the occasion, it seems likely that Cooper and Bale who won Best Supporting Oscar for The Fighter will get a better hearing than on their collaboration in Out Of The Furnace, which was released by Relativity in 2. That film, with such strong performances by Bale and Zoe Saldana, not to mention Casey Affleck and Woody Harrelson, deserved much better than it got. Editors note The clip is no longer available.
